Biography:
From the very beginning, Last Crack's rehearsals were like mini-concerts. Friends would show up to party while the band crafted their songs. For Buddo, the writing was on the wall. Literally. He wrote poetry and quotes with a Sharpee marker all over the walls of the storage unit. It was called the Sinister Funkhouse #17 and the poetry on the walls would become the lyrics for the band's first album of the same name.
Like with any band, a demo recording was next and the band went to the local studio, Randy's Recording, and hired studio owner Randy Green to produce the demo that would contain the songs "The Last Crack," "Concrete Slaughterdogs," "Shelter," and "Saraboyscage." The tape was a hit at local parties and bars and was sent, eventually, to Roadrunner Records.
RR listened to the demo and was impressed by the songs and production. The company ordered the band back into the studio to record a few more songs, "Terse" and "Octopus." Upon hearing the new songs, Roadrunner's then A&R rep, Monte Conner, flew out to Madison to see the band play live. The next thing the group knew, they were signed.
By 1989, a little over a year after the band was created, Last Crack recorded their first album, "Sinister Funkhouse #17". The material was ready, but what would be the cover art? At the end of a scheduled photo shoot, Buddo convinced the photographer to hang around for another shoot. He had an idea that he thought "might get used for something," but if not, he'd have explored his mind's imagery. In front of a canvas spattered with red paint to represent blood, Buddo posed nude in a variety of poses that were borderline vaudeville. It was late fall, 1988 and Buddo was at home with his family for Thanksgiving. The record label had a deadline and tracked down his parent's phone number. Monte, Roadrunner's label rep, was on the line and excited, "You know, that archery position shot, I love it, it's the cover. Let's run with it, we have a deadline, it looks great!" Buddo thought a minute and said, "Well, if it's meant to be, so be it, okay." So there it was, Buddo, completely naked on the front cover of Last Crack's first album, striking an archer-like pose, a very bold image. The rest of the band was speechless at the time. They had heard a few rumors regarding the cover art, but really had no idea what was in store. The cover of debut album put the band on the map. The controversial cover, band pictures and interviews were in scores of magazines. Last Crack was all the buzz. "Sinister Funkhouse #17" shocked the press and opened the eyes of critics. It's controversial cover art and epic songs had everyone asking, "What will they do next?". That question would be answered with new songs, a new album, and a new producer - Dave Jerden. Jerden was riding high from the success of bands like Jane's Addiction and Alice In Chains and seemed a perfect fit for Last Crack.
The band traveled to Los Angeles to record at the world-class El Dorado studios where Dave Jerden and recording engineer Bryan Carlstrom were able to hone the band's raw talent to create the musical masterpiece, "Burning Time". A video of "Energy Mind" appeared on MTV's Headbanger's Ball which helped the band's popularity grow. Tours of America's east and southeast coasts followed playing alongside Wrathchild America, Armored Saint and King's X. Europe then followed as the band carved out a fanbase in Holland, Germany and Belgium, playing clubs and festivals. It seemed like destiny, but amid turmoil, the members would go their separate ways. And separate ways would mean new bands. It's amazing to see the volume of work that was born from the ashes of the Last Crack break-up. Don, Paul and Todd would team with drummer Ski and singer Shawn Anthony Brown to put out the lesser known, Runheadstartscreaming record while Buddo teamed with members of former Roadrunner label mates Realm to form White Fear Chain. Drummer Philo took up the skins with White Zombie. A plethora of other projects came and went until Buddo, Paul, Todd and later Don joined forces again to create the band Magic 7. Again the magic of their songwriting produced another great album. But again, the band parted ways.
2002 would bring a reunion of Last Crack (without Philo) that was recorded live in Madison, Wisconsin. The bonus live tracks that appear on this re-editions are taken from that show and corresponding album, "Burning Funkhouse Live", courtesy of Rφkker Records.
