Re-releases of power metal band White Skull by MMP
Posted by: warlordtony on Aug 16, 2008 - 02:15 PM
Labels' News While some power metal bands aim for heaviness at all cost, other are more like storytellers – capturing epic tales and sealing them in beautiful, yet powerful musical forms. White Skull fits right into the second category, standing next to such icons as Hammerfall, Running Wild and Nocturnal Rites. The two exclusive re-editions of “Tales From The North” and “Public Glory, Secret Agony” bring some of the most exciting releases in the history of epic power metal that will enchant your imagination forever.

“Tales From The North” (1999)
This epic concept album based on Nordic mythology has quickly become a milestone in the group’s career. Released by the acclaimed label Nuclear Blast Records, “Tales From The North” showcased true power metal perfection – songs like “Gods of the Sea”, “The Killing Queen” and the title track easily took the listener back to the times of raging Vikings. Thrilling guitars, fast drums and hymn-like choruses made up for a truly memorable musical experience, powered with one of the most extraordinary female voices in the history of metal. The album also featured a guest appearance by Chris Boltendahl from Grave Digger.

“Public Glory, Secret Agony” (2000)
This time the album’s concept involved the history of the Roman Empire, especially the period centered around Julius Caesar and his relations with the Egyptian queen - Cleopatra. The LP managed to perfectly capture the spirit of the epoch, introducing monumental tracks such as “High Treason” and “The Roman Empire” and coupling them with the atmospheric, “evil-sounding” tunes like “Anubis The Jackal” and “The Mangler”. Once again White Skull delivered brilliant musicianship backed with De Boni’s passionate voice, creating an ultimate power metal masterpiece.

White Skull’s re-issues will be available in a new digipak edition limited to 2000 copies. Metal Mind Productions set the release date for 25th August 2008 in Europe and 28th October 2008 in USA (via MVD).

Bio
The band was formed in 1988 in Vicenza, Italy. Their first self-titled demo was released in 1991 and immediately caught the attention of the Italian metal press. Before releasing their next demo, the band played several gigs to gain proper experience. Finally, on May 1994, White Skull returned on the scene with “Save the Planet”, which instantly scored high notes in numerous magazines. Soon the band was featured on two heavy metal compilations: “Nightpieces 4” (January 1995) and “Area Sismica” (June 1995), and a few months later an independent Italian label Underground Symphony offered the group a record deal. This way on April 15th, 1995, White Skull’s debut LP – “I Won’t Burn Alone” – saw the light of day. The fan and press reaction was again very enthusiastic – many opinions focused on the epic proportions of WS’s music and Federica de Boni’s amazing vocals. The group played a bunch of promotional shows and after that started working on a follow-up album. “Embittered” was released on February 19th, 1997, again with the support of Underground Symphony. The album was much more complex than the debut offering and concentrated more on the atmosphere, which later on became the main focus for White Skull. The release of “Embittered” was followed by an extensive tour which kept the band busy until 1998. The definite highlights of the tour were the performances in Berlin (with UDO and DORO) and at the Gods of Metal festival in Italy, supporting Overkill.
In February ’99 White Skull released an EP called “Asgard”, which preceded the long-awaited third LP – “Tales From The North” – which hit the stores on February 25th, 1999. Tales From The North” quickly became noticed on the power metal scene and right after the album was released, White Skull went on the “Excalibur Millennium 2000 Tour” with Grave Digger, which covered Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
On May 22nd, 2000, the band’s fourth LP – “Public Glory, Secret Agony” – landed in stores, released by Breaker Records (a record company owned by Udo Dirkscneider) and distributed by Nuclear Blast.
In February 2001 Federica De Boni decided to leave the band due to personal problems. She was soon replaced by a male vocalist from Argentina – Gustavo “Gus” Gabarro’. The renewed group recorded their fifth album – “Dark Ages” (2002, Frontiers Records) – and promoted it with a series of spectacular shows, including performances at such festivals as Blind Guardian Open Air, Badia Rock Festival, Metal Dayz and Tradate Iron Festival. Between 2003 and 2004 White Skull went through two line-up changes and greeted new musicians: guitarist Danilo Bar and bassist Steve Balocco. The following years brought two more LPs: “The XIII Skull” (2004, Frontiers Records) and “The Ring of the Ancients” (2006, DragonHeart Records), both highly acclaimed among the fans and critics. After the last release, Gustavo “Gus” Gabarro’ left the group for personal reasons. White Skull decided to return to their original formula, thus Elisa “Over” De Palma became the band’s new and permanent singer.
White Skull remains one of the most talented modern power metal groups, brilliantly joining skillful musicianship with passionate vocals and lyrics portraying epic tales straight from the pages of history. “Tales From The North” and “Public Glory, Secret Agony” are definitely some of the highlights in the group’s career, both being truly unforgettable experiences. But be careful, because once you dive into White Skull’s fascinating world of adventure, there’s no turning back!
