Biography:
Heathen was formed in 1984 by Lee Altus and Carl Sacco who were inspired by 70's rock, the NWOBHM and the first wave of Thrash Metal. With vocalist Sam Kress and second guitarist Jim Sanguinetti, Heathen played its first gig in April 1985. However, within the year the line-up has changed, and the new members were replaced by Dave White aka David Godfrey (vocals) and Doug Piercy (guitars), with the addition of Eric Wong as first bassist. In 1986 they released first demo, Pray For Death. The tape caught the attention of Combat Records, who agreed to promote Heathen's debut album Breaking The Silence, released in 1987. During the recording, Wong left the band, soon to be replaced by Mike "Yaz" Jastremski. The LP itself was recognized mainly by Sweet's cover "Set Me Free", which was released as a single. Breaking The Silence was sold in 100,000 copies worldwide, definitely clearing a road to success. Unfortunately, another changes in the line-up occurred. Starting with Darren Minter, who took the place of Carl Sacco, the changes continued as Dave White was briefly replaced by Paul Baloff and Mike Jastremski left the band to form Pigs. In the following year White returned and Heathen begun touring with a rotating bass slot, which included Vern McElroy and Manny Bravo. It took the band four years to record follow-up album, Victims Of Deception. Released through Roadracer Records, it showed extreme musical progress of the group, with complex double harmony sections being followed by thrilling solos, powerful rhythms and extreme drumming, all sealed by White's stunning vocal performance to form a truly epic album. Victims Of Deception remains the band's best effort so far, truly revealing the sheer substance of thrash metal in motion. The summer of 1991 brought Heathen's first European tour supporting Sepultura, and later on US tour. The plans changed after a accident involving Randy Laire (who played the bass at that time) and his girlfriend. After grieving their deaths, the band was forced to search for a new bass player. Eventually the job was given to Jason Viebrooks. Then Doug Piercy was replaced by Ira Black. With this line-up Heathen started recording new material, which was to be an EP containing covers. During the following years Lee Altus got an opportunity to back the German industrial legend Die Krupps. Dave White briefly joined Bay Area's Inner Threshold; Ira Black fronted Vicious Rumours and Jason Viebrooks found himself in Dave Lombardo's Grip Inc. Darren Minter cooperated with Die Krupps, Soul Motor and Sandswipe. Heathen was slowly becoming a mere memory, until a surprising reunion. In 2001, Heathen got back together with most of the 1992 line-up to take part in Chuck Billy's Thrash Of The Titans. The concert resulted as an incredible success and soon Heathen received an invitation to play on the 2002 Wacken festival in Germany. The band got great reviews and begun considering an official return to the thrash scene. In the end of 2003, Heathen reentered the studio to finish their old recordings and add their four-song demo Opiate For The Masses, which included tracks from Victims of Deception. The whole material was entitled Recovered and was released in 2004. While awaiting their new full-length album, do not miss the chance to experience once again the thrash mastery in the brilliant and explosive Victims of Deception!
