MOTÖRHEAD + THE BON SCOTT BAND
November 2, 2002
BARCELONA

This was the third of three nights I spent in Barcelona (the first night, I went to see Gamma Ray), so again there I was at Razzmatazz seeing Motörhead touring in support of their latest release "Hammered". I've never been a big Motörhead fan but nonetheless, I always enjoy seeing them live (they always put on an awesome show), and I fully respect them... they have been around for a very long damn time and have released so many albums, with which any self respecting metal fan should be familiar...

The almost sold-out crowd was a mixture of traditional metalheads and a few punk-rockers. Opening the show was THE BON SCOTT BAND, a five-piece Spanish AC/DC cover band. They kicked off with "Shot Down In Flames" and "Back In Black" and by this point, the audience was already jumping around, dancing and singing along to the songs. The classics kept coming: "Thunderstruck", "Highway To Hell"... Also included was "Iced Beer", a new song written by the band, but it's still 100% AC/DC. The songs were faithfully reproduced and the band was more than capable of playing them note for note, if you close your eyes, you would bet that are AC/CD themselves who're playing!!

The crew took the stage to prepare for MOTÖRHEAD and after some wait finally the lights went down. Lemmy appears on stage to the roaring of the fans, approaches the microphone and tell the crowd "we are Motörhead, born to kick your ass!!!" and immediately they launches into a ferocious rendition of "We Are Motörhead" off 2000's album of the same name. There were already people crowd surfing and a mosh pit going. The band continued on a roll with lots of their classic material and lots of more recent stuff as well: "No Class", "Shoot You In The Back", "Civil War", "Metropolis", "Brave New World", "Dr. Rock", "Over The Top", "Shut Your Mouth"... They also played a cover song, "God Save The Queen" by Sex Pistols and "R.A.M.O.N.E.S.", their tribute song to the Ramones and dedicated to the late Joey & Dee Dee Ramone. "Sacrifice" was awesome, half way through the song, Mikkey Dee (ex-King Diamond) did an amazing drum solo and I have to agree with what Lemmy says about Mikkey being the best drummer in the world. He is one of the most physically active drummers I've ever seen! He totally destroys his drumkit with sheer power. After that we got to have "Going To Brazil" and "Orgasmatron", which was played with only pinpoints of green light highlighting the musicians' faces from beneath and the eyes in the Motörhead monster backdrop shining in red light. Really scary!! The band closed the main set with the classics "Killed By Death" and "Iron Fist". The band left the stage and everything went dark, then sounds of sirens began to fill the air, the roar became deafening, Motörhead came back and the band went straight into "Bomber", without any doubt, a crowd favourite. Needless to say the highlight was the finale with their most famous song "Ace Of Spades" and "Overkill". All in all, it was a great 2 hour set with all 3 members on fine form: Phil's guitar playing was in your face aggressive, Mikkey's drumming was fiery and powerful with drum beats that rock the very ground you stand on and Lemmy... well, he never changes, there is no more classic image than the image of Mr. Kilmister with his bullet belt and white boots, head thrown back, growling into the microphone and playing his Rickenbacker bass...

After the show there was a party backstage that was actually fun. We entered the dressing room and then we dressed guitarist Phil up like a woman HAHAHAHA :)) (see picture below). A pretty funny end to the night :) -Review & photos by Marina-
